Welcome to my WordPress Oerth Wiki. Oerth is the planet on which the adventures of the World of Greyhawk occur. Most of the written material is concerned with the eastern end of the central supercontinent know as the Flanaess. This gets its name from the original human inhabitants of the region, the Flan (not related to the dessert). The Flanaess are known for their 4 human ethnicities (Bakluns, Suel, Flan, and Oerid) and its ever increasing number of other humanoid races and monsters.
The Flanaess became the most populated area of Oerth following the Invoked Devastation (a magic apocalypse) that prompted a mass migration into the fertile area. Since then, there have been several kingdoms and would-be empires that have risen and fallen. The current year is 499 Common Year as determined by the archmages in the City of Greyhawk.
The area that concerns us is the Sea of Gearnat located in the south central Flanaess. Located north of the Azure Sea, the Sea of Gearnat is a place where fortunes have reversed with grand effect. Some of the original kingdoms, somewhat famous for their magic and artifice have fallen to dust and are no more than rumor, legend, and tall tales.
What primarily concerns us is the Pomarj on the western side of the Sea and the southern coast of Wooly Bay. Important Note: I have taken liberties with the time frames here because I don’t want our campaign to happen during the Greyhawk Wars.
The Pomarj was primarily inhabited by Flan tribes through most of history even after the Great Migrations. It wasn’t until Keoland and Ulek decided to exploit the region’s mineral wealth that other “more civilized” people moved in. Under the Principality of Ulek, the Pomarj was divided into baronies in order to facilitate mining and shipping. Highport was founded as the central shipping port. And all was well for a time. Until, the barons decided they wanted nothing more to do with Ulek. They broke with the Principality and the Keoish royalty behind them. This proved to be their undoing because the area was raided by orcs – the villages and towns burned down and the people killed or taken as slaves. Highport was besieged, razed, and then partially rebuilt by the orcs as THEIR new trade center and a protected haven for their pirate navy.
The Pomarj is currently ruled by fraternal twins, Mazoga Kan and Ulam Kan. They hold sway from the city of Blue, but their cousin sits as the Lord Mayor of Highport.
